A good first step...

Our little man!
It’s approaching a year since we received the call that started us on the path to fatherhood. I suppose there were many calls, many first steps, many long nights reading and researching, contemplating and discussing. There were years of timidly hoping but never truly believing. There were a few early attempts and false starts and all of these moments were a part of the journey as much as any other. But this was the call that turned the corner, where the dream had a name – Christopher.

In a matter of weeks we went from being a carefree couple living in a one bedroom apartment ready to take on our third decade together to a pair of scrambling idiots setting up home in a new 2 bedroom space, living for the nights we had visitation, putty in a three-year-old’s hands. The first unsupervised visit, the first full-blown temper tantrum, the first Christmas morning, standing before the judge, hearing the word “daddy” for that very first time. It’s been quite a year!

Several of my friends have challenged me to document all of this as it happens. So here it goes.

I want to dedicate this space to all the funny, challenging, defining moments of this journey into parenthood – memories of the last year and all the ones yet to happen. Here’s my exploration of what it is to become a family in this very non-traditional day and age we live in. I hope this blog gives you a few laughs, maybe a couple of happy tears and, you never know, maybe the courage to start a family and begin your own journey into helpless chaos and happy surrender.

Cheers!
